On August 14, 2010 at Louisiana State University SQL Saturday #28 will be held. If you have yet to attend a SQL Saturday you should try to make this event. Now I know what you are thinking, Baton Rouge in August. Well before you make a quick decision about not attending take a look at everything that will take place

Breakfast Tracks - SQL and Beignets (All Novice or Beginning Level)

At 7:30 AM we will have three sessions. All three sessions will be introduction, novice or 100 level. If you are new to SQL Server or just getting started or trying to get started then these sessions are for you. You can learn from the best in the industry two SQL Server MVPs and a Business Intelligence Expert. Here are the three sessions:

Four SQL Tracks and Three .Net Tracks

We have worked hard on finding some of the brightest SQL and .Net speakers. Fortunately for us, it wasn’t very difficult. We have over 80 sessions submitted. Now that the we have closed the call for speakers we will be spending time putting together a great schedule. With so many sessions we have decided to have a minimum of seven tracks with six sessions each. That will give us at least 56 sessions plus the 3 breakfast beginner sessions. We are considering adding two more tracks, so stay tuned to the SQL Saturday site for updates.

Host of Microsoft MVPs

Finally, we have commitments from 13 Microsoft MVPs for this event. Not taking anything from our non-MVP speakers because all of our speakers are great, but we are excited to have so many MVPs at this SQL Saturday. Each track (SQL and .Net) will include MVP speakers.

Microsoft .NET Framework from Scratch

Come see this session that Keith Elder did in a pre-TechEd conference. The cost of this session was $400-$500. Space is limited so please sign up ASAP. This session is a part of our 2010 Baton Rouge .NET and SQL Saturday. You will need to register in two places if you want to attend this session, SQL Saturday #28 and Event Brite SQL Saturday Baton Rouge.

This seminar is for anyone who is starting at ground zero with .NET and wants a deep dive into the platform starting from scratch. It is designed for developers experienced in at least one other language, and starts with the basics of . NET and covers Microsoft Visual Studio, writing code in C#, and how to build applications in various technologies of the platform such as Windows, Web, Microsoft Silverlight, and Windows Mobile. If you are new to writing applications on Microsoft .NET, this is the place to be.

So if you have the time, come out and network with some of the smartest SQL Server and .Net professionals in the country. I have had the opportunity to attend sessions from most of our speakers and I have to say you will definitely learn something if you attend.

We'll dive into the different editions of Visual Studio 2010 (Premium, Test, Ultimate, etc.), TFS licensing, and an intro into agile processes with TFS. Topic: Intro to NHibernate with Fluent NHibernate
Object-Relational Mappers (ORMs) have started to make their way into mainstream .NET development with the advent of LINQ-to-SQL and the Entity Framework from Microsoft. Before that, though, there was NHibernate. Based on the Java Hibernate project, NHibernate is one of the most mature .NET ORMs in the marketplace. The Fluent NHibernate project builds on this to make NHibernate a breeze to configure. In this presentation, Brian will discuss the pros and cons of ORMs in general, and demonstrate how NHibernate can take the pain out of writing your persistence layer.

Topic: Demystifying Windows Communication Foundation

Windows Communication Foundation was released with the .Net 3.0 framework and is the future of the platform for distributed computing. With .Net 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) became a first class citizen with additional tooling and add ons for Windows Workflow Foundation. In this session we are going to look at WCF from the standpoint of how to transition from ASMX web services and some of the important things you should know about WCF. If you have been hesitant in adopting WCF and still writing ASMX web services, this session will hopefully put you over the edge to giving WCF a try. I assure you, once you do, you will never look back. Don't worry though, this isn't a complete WCF sales pitch. We'll also do a rusty washers / shinny pennies comparison about WCF to get a real world feel for where it stands. In other words, no sugar coating, just straight talk.

Today's applications need to do more than simply work. They need to draw in the user, and provide a differentiated experience. This means moving beyond battleship gray forms, boxy UIs, and providing a positive user experience. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) provides powerful capabilities to develop a compelling user interface, the kind that makes an application stand out. In this session, we'll examine the core concepts of WPF such as layout panels, data binding, styles and control templates, and we'll use them to develop an application UI from the ground up.

Steve is a Software Development Manager at Amedisys, Inc. His experience includes 9 years of C++ and C# development in Windows and Web applications. Currently he is using the Entity Framework as the data layer for a web-based SOA enterprise application at Amedisys.

Topic: ADO.Net Entity Framework

Brett and Steve will be discussing Microsoft's Entity Framework, including its advantages and its shortcomings as an application data layer. As they are using it in a large application that is in active development, they will discuss some of the issues that have come up using Entity Framework and how to work around those problems. Finally, they will hit on Microsoft's roadmap for Entity Framework, as Microsoft has big plans for it going forward.
The target audience is the intermediate to advanced .NET developer who has a familiarity with layered application development, particularly those who have previously worked with other .NET data layer technologies (such as ADO.NET, DataSets, NHibernate, and Linq to SQL). After the discussion, the audience will have a feel for what is possible using the Entity Framework and have a head start toward deciding whether or not to use it in their next application.

This talk is freshly updated for Tech Ed Europe where I will deliver it Nov 13th. I am using the version of Vista Bridge delivered in the SDK for Windows 7 on the PDC hard drive. The ADO.NET Data Services framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries that enable the creation and consumption of data services for the web. The goal of the ADO.Net Data Services framework is to facilitate the creation of flexible data services that are naturally integrated with the web, using URIs to point to pieces of data and simple, well-known formats to represent that data, such as JSON and plain XML. This results in the data service being surfaced to the web as a REST-style resource collection that is addressable with URIs and that agents can interact with using the usual HTTP verbs such as GET, POST or DELETE.

Acadiana .NET User Group Meeting 10: Microsoft Virtual Earth, and what can it do for you.
Come by and see the latest version of the Microsoft Virtual Earth platform, which can now deliver the Virtual Earth mapping experience on the desktop, on mobile devices, and via broadcast. The new release features mobile support, expanded international mapping, richer imagery, a broader range of data, and improved functionality. Organizations using Virtual Earth can see more and do more than ever, with enhancements that allow users to find, discover, and visualize data in new and innovative ways. Attend this presentation to learn about the rich capabilities of Microsoft Virtual Earth. We will show some "eye candy demos" and code will also be provided after the presentation.
As usual, food and drinks will be provided, and socialization is highly recommended. As I mentioned in the last email, we are working diligently to get our site updated and revamped with events and schedules in the release version Silverlight 2 as soon as possible. We are hoping to have media, audio, and past slides of all meetings all integrated on the site. Most of the code will be open source and help the community to learn how to create Silverlight 2 web applications.  I hope to announce more on that at a later date.

There has been a lot of talk about this new ability in .NET 3.5 called Language Intergrated Query (LINQ). What does it do and why should you care?. The basics in new functionality should be: does it save you time, improve your design, and/or allow your application to run more efficient/faster? LINQ not only achieves all of this, but can also expand how you interact with several data driven design paradigms and solutions in effective and efficient means. This is one of my most popular talks. It walks through the maze of issues that developers from all parts of the universe (except Cleveland) encounter when trying to connect. We'll see how to determine which servers are visible, how to make servers visible (and hide them), how to determine if they're running or stopped, how to know when they go down and what to do when it happens. We'll touch on MARS and several new ADO.NET 2.0 enhancements that address some long-standing connection issues. Advanced Topics in WPF Once you get past the initial learning curve in WPF of figuring out the XAML syntax and the basic structure of WPF applications, you will discover that there is a rich infrastructure that goes beyond that for implementing rich, visually compelling applications. This talk will explore some of the more advanced aspects of WPF, including data binding, using control and style templates, and using visual effects such as transparency and animation. You'll learn about data contexts and the way data flows to bound UI controls and elements. You'll see how to flow styles down the element hierarchy to make more maintainable and theme-able applications. You'll see how to override the presentation of a control without needing to derive a class and use a lot of low level code to do so. You'll also see how to use some basic animation and transparency to create more appealing UIs for your users.
