Confessions of a Design Therapist

Exposing the Design Secrets of Hamburgers, GUIs, Lawsuits, and Pizzas

Norm Cox (Owner/Principal, Cox & Hall, LLC)

As a 34-year consultant in design for innovation, communication and usability, Norm will share his design processes, insights, observations, eureka moments and war stories from his rich, Forrest Gump-esque consulting career. Topics will include his design of the first graphical interface (Xerox Star), travels with Tufte, the Apple v. Microsoft copyright lawsuit, pizza fails, and other examples of design thinking challenges. The journey will emphasize the real-world need for a broad base of knowledge, blending art/design, technology, human sciences, communication, research and personal empathy to design effective, delightful and inspired real-world solutions.

Norm Cox is co-founder and principal of Cox & Hall, an experience design consultancy in Colleyville, TX. Educated in Architecture and Design at Louisiana State University, he began his career at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center as the visual designer for the Xerox “Star”, the first personal computer to introduce a graphical user interface. In 1982, Norm began his own consulting practice to expand his knowledge, experience, talents and influence in this budding field of computer-human interaction design. He has been involved as designer for numerous leading edge user interfaces for a broad range of domestic and inter-national clients.

He is named as innovator and inventor on 29 design patents relating to user interface design for Xerox, Sun Microsystems, IBM and Samsung, and has won numerous industry awards for his product design. He is a frequent lecturer to businesses, universities, design conferences and special interest groups, and has served as juror for international design competitions. He was also the key expert witness for the defense in the infamous Apple v. Microsoft copyright infringement litigation.
